Art at Moyles

Art at Moyles

Inspired by his frequent travels in Mongolia where he has established an eco-tourist site for adventure travellers on the shores of Lake Hovsgol, Simon Moyle spoke of "the importance of Mongolia's evolving artists" in 2003 and how he wished to introduce the British public to the brilliance and originality of contemporary Mongolian art.  One of the country's leading artists, well known for his landscapes, Choindongiin Khurelbaatar, was offered a one-man show the following year and since that time, his work is sponsored and exhibited each year at various venues around the UK, organised by Moyles.  In 2005, Khurelbaatar was invited to stay at Moyles and paint some scenes from in and around Hebden Bridge.  These works are hung on our walls and some are available for purchase as Limited Edition Prints.

The other of our resident artists is Lynn Poland who has two main streams of work; landscape and musicians, although she has recently started to experiment with still-life painting.  She is particularly drawn to areas of open countryside or shorelines. "The simplicity of ribbons of land and sky divided by hedges and roads that appear as visual scars across the landscape provide the structure for my paintings. Working in the landscape gives a tremendous sense of freedom and the opportunity to use dramatic colour and varying textures", says Lynn.  Her paintings on display at Moyles are of the Hebden Bridge area but are dramatically different in style to Khurel's works. They are also available to buy.

The musicians are an antidote to serious concerns which allow Lynn's imagination to take flights of fancy. They started from a series of tiny drawings of Barcelona buskers which she had sketched whilst on holiday.  She started her professional career as a portrait painter so it was a pleasure for her to return to figure work.

All our bedrooms have artworks on display from local artists including Alan Gummerson, as well a few unusual pieces which Simon has accumulated from his travels.
